Silent advances.

چکیده
Ramalitse Sakoane It is only about 25 years since the abolition or abandonment of TB sanatoria in South Africa. It is likely that there are people in South Africa who are familiar with the idea of isolation of TB patients from the general public emanating from the era of TB sanatoria, and it is conceivable that they are likely to be understanding of the reasons that were used to keep patients there during their treatment. These people could help to make the idea of isolation in sanatoria acceptable again to the general public. Anyway, the TB sanatoria of this era were rightfully regarded as hospitals, as indeed they were, and I cannot see why modern day sanatoria should be viewed any differently. Granted, with the likelihood that the patients detained in these envisaged isolation areas may be more likely to die than be discharged, it will be a mammoth task to convince the “detainees” to stay there or their families to allow them to be kept there, especially if they are minors or the elderly infi rm. It is a tough call but it is worth a try. The South African government owes it to the South African public to explore this idea or one along these lines. There is no time for chickening out on this XDR-TB issue [1].

Towards a Practical Silent Speech Interface Based on Vocal Tract Imaging
The paper describes advances in the development of an ultrasound silent speech interface for use in silent communications applications or as a speaking aid for persons who have undergone a laryngectomy. It reports some first steps towards making such a device lightweight, portable, interactive, and practical to use. Simple experimental tests of an interactive silent speech interface for everyda...
متن کاملTowards a practical silent speech recognition system
Our recent efforts towards developing a practical surface electromyography (sEMG) based silent speech recognition interface have resulted in significant advances in the hardware, software and algorithmic components of the system. In this paper, we report our algorithmic progress, specifically: sEMG feature extraction parameter optimization, advances in sEMG acoustic modeling, and sEMG sensor se...
متن کاملSilent New Brain Lesions: Innocent Bystander or Guilty Party?
With the advances in magnetic resonance imaging, previously unrecognized small brain lesions, which are mostly asymptomatic, have been increasingly detected. Diffusion-weighted imaging can identify small ischemic strokes, while gradient echo T2* imaging and susceptibility-weighted imaging can reveal tiny hemorrhagic strokes (microbleeds). In this article, we review silent brain lesions appearin...
متن کاملRecognition and Real Time Performances of a Lightweight Ultrasound Based Silent Speech Interface Employing a Language Model
The work presents advances in the implementation of an ultrasound based silent speech interface system. Use of a portable acquisition device, a visual speech recognizer system with a language model, and real time tests with the Julius system are described. Experiments with two types of visual feature extraction are also presented. Results show that good recognition and real time performance can...
متن کاملSilent subcortical brain infarction
Introduction: The silent brain lesions detected by MRI were fairly common not only in first-ever stroke but also in normal elderly subjects. Some recent studies show the possible role of silent sub-cortical brain infarction in ischemic stroke. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of silent sub-cortical brain infarction in acute first-ever ischemic stroke. Methods: In this descrip...
متن کاملImpact of lack of acoustic feedback in EMG-based silent speech recognition
This paper presents our recent advances in speech recognition based on surface electromyography (EMG). This technology allows for Silent Speech Interfaces since EMG captures the electrical potentials of the human articulatory muscles rather than the acoustic speech signal. Our earlier experiments have shown that the EMG signal is greatly impacted by the mode of speaking. In this study we extend...
